Vietnamese Political Prisoner: Begging for grandfather's release

Tran Phan Yen Nhi / Translated by: Như Ngọc (Danlambao) - An Minh Bac, March 9, 2014.

To: Mr. Truong Tan Sang, President of Vietnam.

My name is Tran Phan Yen Nhi. I was born in 1999 and currently reside at An Hoa hamlet, An Minh Bac commune, U Minh Thuong district, Kien Giang province. I am the granddaughter of Mr. Nguyen Huu Cau, born in 1947, who has spent 39 years in prison. Currently, my grandfather is imprisoned in solitary confinement in Z30A Prison in Xuan Loc, Dong Nai.

Dear Mr. President,

This is my 4th letter pleading you to release my grandfather since I visited him on June 4, 2013. Before that, my great grandmother, grandfather, aunt and father had sent many various agencies more than 500 petitions and letters pleading for the release of my grandfather. But the petitions and letters were sent out without returning any results.

I feel sorrowful for the soul of my great grandmother since she passed away without knowing where her petitions were destined for
and what kind of result they could get. What a sad feeling for my great grandmother! I have promised with her soul to continue to write you, Mr. President, calling for help for her only son, who is my beloved grandfather. I pray for her blessing for my grandfather’s wish as he said ‘the prisoner who has spent too much time in prison will be released.’

GIESSEN - (red).

Vietnam: Rights lawyer Le Quoc Quan on hunger strike

Như Ngọc (Danlambao) - According to VRNs, during the family visit this morning, the prisoner of conscience Le Quoc Quan confirmed his family that he has been on a hunger strike for 6 days since February 2, 2014.

The rights lawyer demands seeing a priest so he can receive sacraments and blessing, receiving a Holy Bible, pens and law books for making research to defend himself at his up-coming appeal trial, which is announced to take place on February 18, 2014. He also demands the improvement of the detention conditions at Hoa Lo Prison, where he has been imprisoned in a very crowded cell and banned from using pens and books.

On October 2, 2013, Mr. Quan received a 30 months in prison sentence for tax evasion, a sentence he has strongly rejected.

The Vietnamese communist regime has been silent from prominent international calls for the release of Mr. Quan. Recently, the U.S. delegation reiterated a call for his release at the Vietnam’s Universal Periodic Review on February 5, 2014.

Mr. Le Quoc Quyet, a younger brother of Mr. Quan, told VRNs reporter that his family is very worried about his brother’s health condition. Mr. Quan said he continues to make hunger strike until the appeal hearing and will engage on a prolong hunger strike after the hearing if the appeal court will uphold the arbitrary verdict of the lower court.

The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers

Viel heisse Luft fűr nichts. Dieser Network hat die Bloggers nicht zusammengefűhrt.
-------------------------------------
To promote and protect human rights, including fundamental freedoms, democracy and dignity, we hereby announce the establishment of the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers. Human rights promotion and protection will remain our aim as long as there are widespread human rights violations in Vietnam.

Our core values are transparency, community spirit, democracy, pluralism, and inclusiveness. The network is and will remain non-partisan and non-profit.

The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers believes that the promotion of fundamental freedom is the prerequisite for the promotion of human rights. Every Vietnamese person must have the right to decide how to live his or her life and contribute to the development of our nation. Everyone must have the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers. Therefore, the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers, with all our capacity, shall commit itself to protecting people’s rights and freedoms from restrictions and censorship.

The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers believes that human rights are for the benefit of every person, as well as a prerequisite for progress of our society and a shared desire of all peoples. Human rights are universal, indivisible and interdependent; they must be for all. Consequently, the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers commits itself to protecting and promoting human rights in Vietnam and contributing to improving the respect for rights in our region and in the world.

The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers believes that every Vietnamese person must be treated with
respect and must be considered equal in their pursuit of happiness. Thus, the creation of a liberal democracy, where difference and diversity are not only respected but also encouraged as an impetus for social development, is what all of us should aim for and is what has become an urgent need in this era.

The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers believes that human rights protection is the duty of everyone,
not just a group of people, an organization or a government. We believe that it is the right and an obligation of every Vietnamese person to contribute to protecting the human rights, including fundamental freedoms and democracy and dignity of our country’s over ninety million people. The Network of Vietnamese Bloggers is an assembly of bloggers seeking to unite in our effort to fulfil this obligation.

in talking about human rights inside and outside the country, raising public awareness about human rights, defending victims of human rights violations, empowering bloggers' capacities, and monitoring the human rights performance of the authorities.

Let us join forces to overcome fear and raise the hope of change for a new Vietnam now and for generations to come; let us strive to promote and protect human rights, including fundamental freedoms, equality, and dignity for all Vietnamese people in order to help create a new future for Vietnam.

Danlambao- At 12 p.m. today, Aug. 21, 2013, Hanoi Police unexpectedly mobilized its force to abduct Nguyen Van Dung (Facebook Aduku Adk). At the time of his arrest, Dung promptly sent out a text message to inform that he and a female friend were arrested while on the road.

Shortly thereafter, police carried out an illegal search operation at Dung’s private residence at 201-A7, 1A Line, Khuong Thuong Co-Op, Ton That Tung Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi.

Nguyen Van Dung, born in 1977, nick name Dung Aduku, is a very active participant in patriotic activities in Hanoi. Dung is also the 13th blogger to sign the Statement 258originated by the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers.

Learning the news, some young bloggers in Hanoi rushed to Dung’s residence to help. However, upon arriving at the scene, they discovered many police in uniform were surrounding and blocking access to the building. According to Dung’s neighbors, police was carrying out a search operation inside Dung’s apartment.

A friend of Dung, Trinh Anh Tuan (Facebook Gio Lang Thang) said: Since noon, two contact
numbers of Dung have had ring tones but nobody picked up the calls.

At 3 p.m., Tuan continued to call and only heard the noise in the background. To this point, all avenues of communication were completely cut off.

Nguyen Van Dung, a native of Phu Tho, was arrested and detained in Hoa Lo Prison for 3 days for participating in an anti-China protest in Hanoi in August 2011.

Hanoi Police carried out the kidnap after committing a series of violation of human rights targeted an English class of a youth group in Hanoi on Aug 13, 2013. These are the acts of a well-planned, systematical repression targeted the patriotic youths in order to destroy their peaceful activities.

At 9:20 p.m., blogger Trinh Anh Tuan (Gio Lang Thang) continued to send out an emergency message that says: After 9 hours, since receiving a message from Nguyen Van Dung (Aduku Adk) informing his arrest at 201, A7, Khuong Thuong Co-Op, Dong Da, Hanoi, we still don’t have any information about his status. Nobody has picked up the calls on his phones. We have searched for his information at the above address without any result. The neighbors refused to open the door for us to enter the building.

When we came to the police station of Trung Tu Ward to report his missing, they replied that there was no evidence of his missing and only the family has the right to report it.

Please share this information to protect Nguyen Van Dung.

VIETNAM SHOULD AMEND LAW TO DEMONSTRATE HUMAN RIGHT COUNCIL CANDIDACY COMMITMENT

STATEMENT FROM A NETWORK OF VIETNAMESE BLOGGERS
VIETNAM SHOULD AMEND LAW TO DEMONSTRATE HUMAN RIGHT COUNCIL CANDIDACY COMMITMENT
The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them.
As a candidate for the HRC for the 2014-2016 tenure, Vietnam must demonstrate its commitment to cooperating with the HRC and upholding “the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights”.
These obligations and responsibilities do not only apply on the international arena, but also inside Vietnam. The Vietnamese government also needs to review the human rights situation in their own country and the Vietnamese people also have a right to freedom of opinion and expression, including on these matters.
In order to improve the protection of human rights in Vietnam, we will take HRC’s principles as guidelines for our actions, which also comply with Vietnam’s obligations under international human rights law.

Blogger Pham Viet Dao arrested

Patience – (Danlambao) - Hanoi Polices arrested blogger Pham Viet Dao yesterday, 06/13/2013. He is charged with "abuse of democratic freedom in order to infringe upon the interests of the state, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens” under the article 258 of the criminal code.

The 61 years old writer, blogger Mr. Pham Viet Dao is well known in Vietnam. He previously held the position of Chief Inspector of anti-corruption in Hanoi Culture and Information Department.

Police arrested Dinh Nhat Uy, older brother of Dinh Nguyen Kha

Như Ngọc (Danlambao) - Around 1:00 p.m., June 15, 2013, Long An city police unexpectedly mobilized a force to surround the property of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien, the mother of Dinh Nhat Uy and Dinh Nguyen Kha, for a search operation without her presence.

By 3:30 p.m., Dinh Nhat Uy, the older brother of Nguyen Dinh Kha, was reportedly escorted home by police to be served a “warrant of urgent arrest”, along with a 3 month detention order.

According to the family, Dinh Nhat Uy was charged with allegedly “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State” under Article 258 of the penal code. The communist authorities have recently used this law to arrest or detent well known bloggers such as Truong Duy Nhat, Pham Viet Dao, Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh.

During the search, police had seized a lot of family properties such as electronic devices, phones, computer hard drives.

Dinh Nhat Uy, born 1983, is the older brother of the patriotic student Dinh Nguyen Kha, who was sentenced to 8 years in prison along with Nguyen Phuong Uyen by a court in Long An city last May.

Since Kha’s arrest, Uy and his family members have been repeatedly harassed and threatened by police. His business has been raided several times and properties taken illegally by police.

Recently, Dinh Nhat Uy has made great efforts to call public attention to the case of his younger brother, Dinh Nguyen Kha, and Nguyen Phuong Uyen. For example, he and his friends have posted their pictures holding banners with the message “China get out of the East Sea!” on their Facebook accounts. Such banners were previously written with blood by Nguyen Phuong Uyen to express her anger with Chinese expansion against Vietnam.

The “China get out of the East Sea!” banners were used by the communist court as criminal possession of materials “that speak ill of China” to foster its case to imprison the two young patriots.

The arrest of Dinh Nhat Uy took place just a few days before the visit to China of Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang. The arrest occurred in Long An city, also the hometown of Mr. Truong Tan Sang.

Nguyen Dac Kien- Critics pile on Vietnam government in rare debate

Critics pile on Vietnam government in rare debate
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam's leaders sought to boost their flagging legitimacy by asking the public for suggestions on constitutional reform. What they got instead was rare open criticism of one-party rule, a fired journalist turned poster boy for dissent, and another lesson on how the Internet has changed the rules of governance.
The flurry of criticism has put Communist Party chiefs on the defensive, upping the pressure on them amid widespread discontent over high-level corruption and a stuttering economy. Those behind the outpouring — a grouping of intellectuals and former officials — say they have no intention of shutting up.
"Many of our fellow countrymen and soldiers have sacrificed themselves to build this current regime," said Le Hieu Dang, former vice chairman of a Communist Party-run organization in Ho Chi Minh City. "Going against the rights of the people can't be tolerated after the blood that has been shed."

Human Rights Organizations Call on the UN to Aid Detained Vietnamese Blogger Le Quoc Quan

BY Eva Gaperin
MARCH 15, 2013

On 27 December 2012 prominent Vietnamese activist and blogger Le Quoc Quan was arbitrarily arrested and detained by local authorities while taking his daughter to school. The arrest was the culmination of years of constant surveillance and harassment over his extensive writing on civil rights, political pluralism and religious freedom for the BBC, online newspapers, and on his blog.
As a lawyer, Quan represented many victims of human rights violations, but was disbarred in 2007 on suspicion of engaging in “activities to overthrow the regime.” Despite these threats, he continued with his human rights advocacy and as a result he has been arrested several times since. In August 2012, he was hospitalized after being severely beaten near his home by unknown assailants—an assault which has not been investigated by Vietnamese authorities.
Since his latest arrest, Quan has been held incommunicado in detention at Hoa Lo No. 1 Prison, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, Viet Nam, and has had access to counsel only twice. No trial date has been set, and reports of a 15-day hunger strike, which has left Quan weak, raise concerns about the state of his health.

Lê Anh Hùng- vietnamesische Vizekanzler Hoàng Trung Hải verwickelt sich in Drogengeschäft

MỘT TIẾNG NÓI CÔNG KHAI VỀ VỤ TỐ CÁO CỦA TÔI
Lê Anh Hùng
Hà Nội, 9/8/2012

Mấy ngày gần đây, trên một số trang mạng trong và ngoài nước xuất hiện thư tố cáo của ông Phạm Hiện, 91 tuổi đời, 67 tuổi đảng, tố cáo PTT Hoàng Trung Hải khai man lý lịch và buôn lậu ma tuý:
1. – Ông “Phạm Hiện, lão thành cách mạng 91 tuổi, 67 tuổi Đảng” tố cáo MỘT PHÓ THỦ TƯỚNG GỐC HOA KHAI MAN LÝ LỊCH, BUÔN LẬU MA TÚY (Trí nhân Media).

HANOI, Vietnam — Vietnam’s government has asked its citizens to debate planned revisions to the country’s constitution. But when journalist Nguyen Dac Kien weighed in on his blog, he quickly discovered the limits of its willingness for discussion. His state-run paper fired him the next day.
Kien had taken issue with a statement by the Communist Party chief in which he said discussions over the revisions should not include questions over the role of the party.

In a post Monday that rapidly went viral, he wrote that the party chief had no right to talk to the people of Vietnam like this, and that state corruption was the real problem.
Kien said he wasn’t surprised by his firing, which was announced Wednesday in an article on page 2 of the Family and Society, the paper where he worked.
“I knew that there would be consequences,” Kien said by telephone. “I have always expected bad things to happen to me. The struggle for freedom and democracy is very long and I want to go to the end of that road, and I hope I can.”
Vietnam opened up its economy in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union deprived it of a vital economic partner and ally, but under an authoritarian regime, government critics, free speech activists and other people the party regards as dissidents can be locked up for many years. The emergence of the Internet as an arena of free and uncontrollable expression, coupled with a stuttering economy, has led to new pressures on the regime, but few think its grip on power is seriously weakening.
The government is revising the constitution for the first time since 1992, citing the need to speed up the country’s development.
Perhaps the most significant change in the draft on the government’s website is the removal of language stipulating that the state sector “plays the leading” role in the national economy. That could help the government in its pledge to restructure the country’s lumbering, corruption-riddled and unproductive state-owned sector, which eats up much of the national budget and has been blamed for the current economic difficulties.

The government has asked for public discussion on the revisions, even opening up its website for comments, a move that carried some risk. In response, a group of several hundred well-known intellectuals, including a former justice minister, have circulated an online petition calling for multiparty elections, private land ownership, respect for human rights and the separation of the branches of government. More than 5,000 people have signed it.
Vietnam’s state-owned television station quoted the Communist Party’s general secretary, Nguyen Phu Trong, as saying those ideas amounted to the abolishment of article 4 of the constitution, which guarantees the political dominance of the party. He said that was a “political, ideological and ethical deterioration” and should be opposed.
Kien immediately took to his blog, writing “you are the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. If you want to use the word deterioration, you can only use it in relation to Communist Party members. You can’t say that about Vietnamese people.” He said there was nothing wrong with wanting political pluralism, and that “embezzlement and corruption” by party members was a bigger problem.
The Family and Society newspaper, which is owned by the ministry of health, said in the article that it fired Kien for “violating the operating rules of the newspaper and his labor contract,” adding that he alone was “accountable before the law for his behavior.”
In a posting on his Facebook page after his firing, Kien said “whatever happens, I just want you to understand that I don’t want to be a hero, I don’t want to be an idol. I just think that once our country has freedom and democracy, you will find out that my articles are very normal, really normal, and nothing big.”
He also said he understood the decision of the paper’s editors, saying “if I were in their position, I may have acted the same.”
